HALIFAX HABITAT FOR HUMANITY

DAYTONA BEACH, FL

How do I apply?

You must first determine if you meet the 3 criteria listed below.  If you do you may pick up an application at our office Monday - Friday 9 AM until 4 PM.  All applicants must then attend a scheduled an Application Orientation Workshop to turn in their completed application with all of the required documentation.  Applications are only accepted during Orientation Workshops.

Need

You may be considered for a Habitat home if your present housing is not adequate, and if you are unable to obtain adequate housing through other conventional means. Lack of adequate housing may include problems with the present structure: water, electrical or sewage service systems; heating system; or failure to meet city property maintenance standards. Also taken into consideration are the number, the ages and the gender of the children compared to the number of bedrooms in your home.

The percentage of your monthly income that you currently spend on housing is considered to determine need. You will be required to openly and fully discuss your financial situation with a member of the Family Selection Committee.

You must be living in and have been living in one of the following cities for the past 12 months: Ormond Beach, Holly Hill, Daytona Beach, South Daytona or Port Orange.

You and your family will be considered if your total income is at least 38% of the median family income. The median income for a family of four in Volusia County is approximately $49,500.  Accordingly, if your monthly income is between $1500 and $2515 a month and you meet the next 2 criteria, you may be considered for homeownership by the Family Selection Committee.

Ability to Pay

Since you will actually be buying your home from Habitat, you must demonstrate a consistent pattern of responsibility in meeting current financial obligations.  This will also demonstrate your ability to meet the monthly mortgage payment based on the cost of your house. This payment will include not only the mortgage payment (at zero-free interest), but the payment for real estate taxes and homeowners insurance. We will help you to determine if this payment will jeopardize your ability to meet all your other family financial obligations and expenses. We will also help you with the budget worksheets to determine your eligibility if so needed.

Willingness to Partner with HHH

  • If approved by the Family Selection Committee and the Board of Directors, you will become a “Family Partner” in the Habitat program. As a “Family Partner,” you must complete between 300 to 500 hours of volunteer work with Habitat, which will count toward your total “sweat equity” contribution to be completed before becoming a homeowner. Your assistance in constructing your home and the homes of others is called “sweat equity,” and may include clearing the lot, painting, helping with construction, providing food for volunteers, working in the Habitat office or the Home Store. Your family can receive credit of up to 50 hours for a single parent household and 75 hours for a two parent household by applying time put in on your behalf by friends and relatives who join in the work.
  • The Family Support Committee will maintain an on-going relationship with you through mentoring, other kinds of support and workshops. This includes financial counseling and household maintenance education.
  • Once you become a homeowner, you will be responsible for maintenance and repairs of your house from the time you move into your home.
